New website launches film animation competition for schools

 

An education website designed to inspire the young filmmakers and animators of the future is this week marking its relaunch with a fantastic animation competition for schools.

 

Film Street ( www.filmstreet.co.uk ), which has undergone extensive redevelopment, hopes its Stop Frame Animation competition will encourage children and schools all over the UK to have a go at creating their very own animation films.

 

The competition to create an original piece of animation is being run in partnership with LGFL (London Grid for Learning) and incorporates one of the new, exciting and fun interactive activities on the revamped Film Street website.

 

‘The Stop Frame Animator activity enables young people to use real film making techniques to create their own short animation, without the need for any expensive equipment,’ explains Film Street’s new Content Director Keith Alexander.

 

‘They can choose from a range of exciting sets, characters and props, as well as adding sound effects and capturing each movement of their animation with a virtual camera. The activity can be used at home or in the classroom and children of all ages will be able to use it.’

 

The competition runs until 26 May 20011 and anyone of school age in the UK can enter and with as many entries as they choose.

 

One winning film will be chosen from London and one from the rest of the UK. Both winners will each receive a Flip HD Digital Camera, worth more than £100 to help them to continue their filmmaking careers.

 

The Stop Frame Animator activity is only one of many new features on the new Film Street website, which now combines video, workshops and interactive activities to encourage young people to have a go at making films and animation in fun and exciting ways.

 

The new production team behind the redesign created the hugely successful ArtisanCam website (www.artisancam.org.uk), which as well as winning several national awards including a BAFTA, is widely recognized as a leading resource for introducing young people to the work of contemporary artists.

Keith Alexander hopes that by applying some of the same award-winning techniques to Film Street, it too will become an invaluable free resource for teachers and schoolchildren aged 5-14 in the UK.

“We have redesigned Film Street in a way which encourages users to have a go at creating film and animation themselves and to submit their work to the site so that other children can be inspired by their creations.   

“Our new video and interactive online content will also help teachers to use the website directly in the classroom to teach young people about the creative processes involved in filmmaking and animation. We also hope teachers will use Film Street in a wider cross-curricular way in the classroom. ”

The redesign of Film Street has been made possible thanks to funding from London Grid for Learning (LGFL) and First Light Movies.

Important LGfL News

Dear Colleagues,

 

I have attached two important documents relating to the LGfL 2.0 contracts. These outline a 10% discount for primary schools for the first three years for sign up before 28^th March. There is also a comparison of several alternative providers in terms of cost and service.

 

Please could you let me know if your school is seriously considering alternatives to LGfL. I am also aware that there may be headteachers out there that have either not received or not shared or considered the LGfL offer pack & contract. Finally if your school has received the pack and would like to sign up but can’t figure out how to do it please let me know and I will do everything I can to help.

 

Just to repeat what was in the letter LGfL is yours –it’s a charitable trust serving London schools, with the aim of best value, best quality and best fit for schools.

London schools have been making use of the London MLE for 4 years now, many with significant success. During 2010 London pupils and teachers made a total of 29 million room visits within Fronter a 68% increase on 2009 and demonstrates that schools are starting to make us of the London MLE platform.

During 2011 we are hoping to encourage more schools to make greater use of Fronter and to understand the benefits that can be achieved for:

·         school improvement

·         pupil engagement

·         saving money

To help us to do this we would like to establish a network of London MLE Champion schools who can work with us within their local areas to showcase good practice and support other local schools in making more use of Fronter.

We have recently been looking at the usage of Fronter across London and have identified your school as one that from the statistics is making significant use of Fronter and we would like to invite you to consider becoming a London MLE Champion School. In recognition of the support that you would be giving us we are offering to reduce the annual cost to your school by 50% (Secondary) / provide the London MLE for free to your school for the period in which you act as a Champion School.

 

 

I would really appreciate your input to who you feel would make a great champion school in your Local Authority. We would like to host an event in April at the Strand. There are four opportunities for school leaders to benefit from the Next Generation Learning programmes in the Spring term. These are open to school senior leaders as well as ICT subject leaders. However, it is strongly recommended that at least two people attend from each school so as to take full advantage of the opportunity the programme provides for planning the integration of Digital Technologies across a full range of school activities. Wherever possible, one of those attending should be the head teacher.

 

The programme is delivered in the context of:

Learning using games opportunity

Dear Colleagues,

 

Here’s an end of term offer....First the context...Recently I’ve been researching the use of games to support learning and came across a brilliant new simulation game developed by NASA’s learning technology unit. The game is quite safe for primary children to use (though definitely not easy!!) and involves them making repairs to the life support system for a base on the Moon. They compete against the clock and in multiplayer mode as part of a team. The game directly supports National Curriculum objectives specifically those for simulations; providing children with a simulation they can explore and allowing them to reflect on the role of simulations as tools to help people develop skills (such as flying aeroplanes) in the real world.

 

So if you are interested here’s the offer....I will come in and work with a small group (up to 6 children) of Y5 or Y6 children on using the simulation. In the first case it would be just for an hour but depending on how things go and if you’re happy we could look at more. I’ll bring in a set of laptops with the software installed. All I will need is a table, power and the internet. It could be a nice activity for a group of children whilst some of the class are practicing for an end of term performance? Alternatively it could be early next term. Anyway let me know if you’re interested and we can take things from there.

ICT Stuff for the new term

We’ve been doing the equivalent of a MLE spring clean over the holidays. All the school buildings should be looking tidy and ready to start the new term. Some stuff to explore for the new term....

 

With the recent release of lots of government collected data into the public domain arrives Digimaps. This offers the full range of Ordnance Survey maps for Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) for a annual subscription per school of £69. Given the quality of the maps (they are staggeringly detailed compared to those on Google for example) I think it is a fantastic bargain. http://digimapforschools.edina.ac.uk/login.html

 

If you’re looking at upgrading your computer systems why not save money by using an open source alternative to Microsoft Office. Open Office 4 Kids is aimed at KS2 children though I think with careful use would be suitable for younger children too. RoboMind is a logo based control program. Ideal for getting KS2 children started with programming. You write programs to steer a rover around a maze. http://www.robomind.net/en/index.html

 

Teachers’ TV program about using free software in schools. The headteacher featured presented at a creativity conference we ran a couple of years back and has gone on to great things http://www.teachers.tv/videos/ict-fun-for-free

 

Know It All have launched a collection of E-safety videos aimed at children. Could be good as the structure for a series of lessons or as for an assembly http://www.childnet-int.org/kia/primary/smartadventure/default.aspx

 

Muvizu is amazing 3D animation software that is completely free. It takes a bit of practice but the program is really sophisticated and could offer a real challenge for children in years 5 & 6. Moonbase Alpha another completely free piece of software developed in conjunction with Nasa. It is a role play game in which multiple teams of children can compete to be first to fix the oxygen supply for their base. Like Muvizu it needs a beefy machine and installation is involved. Poisson Rouge or Red Fish if your French is like mine, is the most wonderful online collection of open ended activities I have come across for under 5s. It is staggeringly well put together and encourages children to explore and play in a way that many commercially available software packages fail at dismally. Basic ICT Skills Course for teachers and TAs

Hi everyone

Hope you all had a good break and are ready for the new term!

 

The attached flyer gives details about inset available to teachers and/or teaching assistants who are very unconfident or inexperienced using computers and ICT.

It is a 10 week course run at the PDC, and is accredited by Hull University. This was previously offered as one of the modules of the year-long ‘ICT For Teaching Assistants’ course which I have run in the past. Due to the current uncertain climate, this module is being offered individually in this term, is available to teachers as well as TAs and, unfortunately, whereas in the past we have been able to pay for the cost of the students’ and administration fees, we will now have to charge for the module. The cost for the module is £150 per student.

 

The flyer has also been sent out in the Headteacher Mailings via Educomms.

 

The deadline for applications is Friday 17^th September and will be on a first come first served basis. Places will be limited.
